Little Grange, Shroton, Iwerne Courtney

Little Grange is a delightful Grade II Listed thatched cottage nestling in the rural village of Shroton. This attractive two storey residential home features end brick stacks with a brick and render whitewashed finish, with a later added tiled extension.

Listed in Historic England, Little Grange is similar to many heritage projects where KEIM is called upon to rectify previous decorating issues. Here the lime render to the front and side elevations had been previously painted using an acrylic masonry paint, while the rear of the property was limewashed with absorbent hybrid cement and lime repairs.

Bitumen had been  applied to the lower section of the gable end facing the road, which was prone to salt debris from gritting and flood damage. In all, the cottage was due a renovation to its exterior to refresh the façade and provide suitable protection for this historic building.

Graham Templeman from Intex Decor contacted KEIM to benefit from our specialist advice and range of products. We suggested a staged pre-treatment and decoration to prepare and protect the surfaces.

This started by stripping the paint and bitumen from the roadside gable and repairing the lime render. All loose and flaking paint was also thoroughly removed from the older part of the property, including kitchen alley, studio outhouse, and the extension to provide a sound base.

With cracks over 1mm being filled using KEIM Spachtel, decoration could then commence which included KEIM Silan Primer being applied to the bare areas as a flood coat. The hybrid lime render, limewashed rear walls, and repair areas were treated with KEIM Soldalit Fixativ.

KEIM Soldalit-ME was specified as the paint system in a three-coat application; first coat of KEIM Soldalit Grob (undiluted) before adding two coats of KEIM Soldalit-ME. Onto the base of the roadside gable, KEIM Concretal-Black was applied.

The completed exterior decoration has refreshed and protected this beautiful heritage thatched cottage, ensuring its character and charm can be enjoyed for years to come.
