St Albans Town Hall, Hertfordshire

The recently refurbished Georgian Grade II Listed Town Hall, which was built in 1831, opened to the public in June 2018 as a new museum and gallery. The architect wanted to use KEIM Mineral Paints because of the importance of allowing buildings to breathe, especially listed buildings, to preserve and protect the structure of the building. The architect, John McAslan + Partners, knew that using a conventional acrylic paint would merely coat the stripped surfaces and create a film around the substrate. This can result in the formation of blisters, which may lead to cracking and flaking paint finishes.

KEIM Royalan was used on the external roman cement surfaces and a perfect colour match was achieved during site trials, completed by Nicola Young, Senior Colourist of KEIM Mineral Paints. KEIM Ecosil-ME was applied internally on the freshly stripped surfaces to give an ultra matt finish. KEIM Ecosil-ME is a high performance photocatalytic mineral silicate paint that uses light energy to neutralise pollution. It is particularly beneficially for people with allergies as it removes nitrogen oxides and pollutants from the atmosphere and the internal environment.
