The Colonnade, a Grade II listed seafront landmark originally constructed to commemorate the coronation of King George V, has recently undergone a programme of essential refurbishment to address long-standing structural defects and the effects of water ingress.
Located in a highly exposed coastal environment, the building required a conservation-led solution capable of managing moisture within the historic fabric while providing lasting protection from driving rain, salt-laden air and biological growth. The project team sought a durable coating system that would be fully compatible with the existing substrate, satisfy conservation requirements and contribute to the long-term preservation of the structure.
KEIM Algicid, a non acidic fungicide wash, was applied to remove biological growth. Dome ceilings and areas where salts were visible were treated with KEIM Silan 100 and areas exhibiting staining were coated with KEIM IF Primer.
KEIM Soldalit Grob, a base coat for filling hairline cracks and textural variations was applied onto all surfaces.
KEIM Soldalit was selected for its exceptional breathability, weather resistance and colour stability. By allowing moisture vapour to escape from the substrate while protecting the façade from the elements, the system helps preserve the building’s historic character and enhances its resilience to future coastal exposure.
