The Long Barn, Norfolk
The project was a high specification barn conversion with the emphasis on low carbon footprint and renewables. PV solar panels and a heat recovery unit were installed along with underfloor heating and triple glazing. The customer wanted a breathable paint that would be able to go over a mixture of substrates including lime, brickwork, plaster and standard render.
The interior finish required was plain white and flat matt. The exterior, again white onto the brickwork, needed to be able to mask the huge variations in brickwork renovations carried out over the years and to give added protection to the soft Norfolk red bricks, whilst retaining the breathability of the building’s natural materials.
KEIM Optil is flat matt, less than 1% sheen, highly light reflective, quick drying and has excellent hiding power. The decorators had never used it before and were impressed by the need for only two coats onto bare plaster, as well as its ease of use.
As with KEIM Optil, KEIM Soldalit used for the exterior is flat matt in appearance. In this case, due to the varying porosity of the brickwork, all exterior surfaces were first treated with KEIM Soldalit Fixativ to help to equalise and bind the brick surface in preparation for the top coats. Only two coats were required after this.
